“How much does a website cost?” is the first question entrepreneurs ask me — and the one the internet answers worst. Between the €200 offer on a marketplace and the €30,000 agency quote, how do you find your bearings? Here is an honest reading grid, based on ten years of shipped projects.
The real market ranges
Business website (€500 to €3,000). A few pages presenting your activity, a contact form, a call button. It’s the essential baseline. At Webatex it costs €500 fixed: custom design, responsive, basic Google optimisation included.
Website with features (€1,500 to €8,000). Online booking, automated quotes, member area, appointments: the site starts working in your place and saving you hours.
E-commerce (€2,000 to €15,000). Catalogue, cart, secure payment, order management, invoicing. The price mostly depends on the number of products, delivery options and the automation you want.
Custom web or mobile app (€5,000 to €50,000+). SaaS, business platform, App Store application: this is no longer a website but a software product. The budget is defined by the features — not the other way round.
What really moves the price
- Custom vs off-the-shelf template. A template costs less upfront but locks you in: generic design, slow pages, plugin dependency. Custom costs more to build and much less to live with.
- The “invisible” features. 3D Secure payments, automatic invoicing, transactional emails, GDPR: this is what turns a site into a selling machine — and where the real budget lives.
- Multilingual. Translating 5 pages into 2 languages is easy. Deploying a site in 45 languages with the right URLs for Google (I did it on one of the platforms in my portfolio) requires real architecture.
- Who produces the content. Copy, photos, product sheets: if everything must be created, the budget rises. If you provide the material, it drops.
The traps in vague quotes
Three red flags to know. One, the teaser price with no scope: a “website from €99” that becomes €2,000 once the “essential” options are added. Two, the subscription that never makes you the owner: you pay monthly for years and lose everything if you leave. Three, the one-line quote: “website creation” protects you from nothing. Demand the detail, page by page, feature by feature.
And after launch?
A website lives: security updates, backups, small changes, hosting. Two options: I train you to be autonomous, or you delegate everything with a monthly care plan (€200/month at Webatex, hosting included, changes included, no lock-in). Add SEO support (€300/month) if your market plays out on Google — it’s often the best ROI of the whole project.
In short
The right budget isn’t the cheapest: it’s the one that earns more than it costs. A €500 website that generates two calls a week pays for itself in a month. A €5,000 store that automates your sales and invoicing gives you back hours every week. Start with the goal — the price follows.
