You have word of mouth, a social media page, maybe a Google listing. So is a website really necessary? Here’s what actually happens in your prospects’ heads — and what it costs you every month.
The reflex nobody admits
Before calling a craftsman, a lawyer, a restaurant or a B2B provider, almost everyone does the same thing: they type your name into Google. At that precise moment, three scenarios are possible.
- They find a professional website: clear, fast, with your work and a button to call you. Trust is established before the first contact.
- They find nothing — or just a social profile: doubt sets in. “Is this serious? Are they even still in business?”
- They find a dated site, slow and unreadable on mobile: that’s worse than nothing. Your digital shopfront says you’re behind the times — even if your work is excellent.
In scenarios 2 and 3, your prospect will never tell you. They’ll simply call your competitor — the one whose site inspires confidence.
A salesperson who works at night
A good website isn’t a business card: it’s a salesperson available 24/7 who answers questions (prices, service area, lead times), shows proof (work, reviews) and drives action (call, form, booking). On the websites I build for my clients, orders come in at night, on weekends, on public holidays — while they do something else. That’s the real difference between “having a website” and “having a website that sells”.
The 5 mistakes that make visitors flee
- No clickable phone number. On mobile, every second of friction loses calls. The number must be tappable everywhere.
- A slow site. Beyond 3 seconds of loading, a large share of visitors give up — and Google demotes you.
- No proof. Without work samples, reviews or faces, you’re asking visitors to take your word for it. They won’t.
- Amateur design. Visitors judge a company’s credibility in seconds, mostly on design. Unfair, but real.
- No clear call to action. If your page doesn’t say what to do next (“Request a quote”, “Call us”), visitors do nothing.
What about larger companies?
The reasoning scales up without changing nature. For an SMB or a mid-size company, the website becomes a business tool: client portal, online quotes, multilingual for export, integrations with your internal software, GDPR compliance, audited security. That’s exactly the kind of project I build — payments, automatic invoicing and real-time dashboards included.
